How to Change Colors in Crochet

Working with more than one color in a project can add interest and variety to the finished look. However, sometimes when we change to a new color, that color change is visible and obvious.  Here’s an easy, quick way to change colors that will not only keep your edges even if you’re working in rows, but will also be invisible wherever you change to a new color. An added bonus is that this works for any crochet stitch with which you happen to be working. For this example, I’m working a double crochet.

Step 1: At the point where you want the color change, work the final stitch until 2 loops remain on the hook.

Step 2: Drop the working yarn and pick up the new yarn. Yarn over and draw a loop through the 2 loops on the hook.

Step 3: Continue with the new yarn as you’re instructed in the pattern.  In this case, because I’m crocheting in double crochet rows, I continue by working 2 ch (turning chain), turn, and work double crochets across the row as usual.

Once I’ve woven in the yarn ends, the color change will be completely invisible.

I can do the same thing in the middle of a row or round, following the same procedure. Simply work the last stitch of the old color until you have 2 loops left on the hook and work the last step of that stitch with the new yarn.

That’s it! Have fun experimenting with lots of colors in your project 💙
