Since January, I’ve spent first thing almost every Wednesday morning with some pretty special third and fourth graders. One of my best friends and colleagues started a crochet club at the elementary school where she teaches. When she mentioned it to me at Christmas, I jumped at the chance to help out. I love it! It’s so cool to walk in the classroom and have the kids yell out my name because they love to see me!
Now, one thing you should know about me is I don’t do well with early morning. I haven’t regularly set my alarm for 5 years so to get to the school by 7:50am can be a challenge. But it’s totally worth it!
I’ll share more about working with beginners at this age later. Today, though, I brought the first granny square scarf I ever made. It has to be 40 years old but is still in pristine condition. The kids first asked me if they could have it, to which I replied “no”. But it got them so jazzed about crochet to see a finished product. Those are the moments I love about teaching, those that get the students so excited!
Do you have a story about working with kids and crochet? Do share!!!
