A cozy, vintage-inspired granny square that brings rustic holiday warmth, handmade charm, and a calm moment amid the Christmas rush.

Photos of the Rustic Christmas Granny Square

The Rustic Christmas Granny Square captures the warmth of a handmade holiday — pine cones, pine boughs, twinkling lights, and shiny baubles glowing by the tree.

This granny square is filled with vintage charm, perfect for A Very Cottage Christmas for which is was designed.

The Rustic Christmas Granny Square is the first square to be released. It’s sets you up for a truly cozy, calm respite in the midst of the holiday busy-ness.

Slow down, enjoy the rhythm of your stitches, and create a cozy piece of Christmas nostalgia.

The Rustic Christmas Granny Square

With the Rustic Christmas granny square, I wanted to design something that still had the traditional granny stitch while combining it with some of my favorite variations.

It starts with a solid circle of double crochets, moves into a round of 2-double-crochet clusters, and then gently opens into a classic granny square

A final round of single crochets worked in the third loop adds a soft touch of texture.

With just five rounds—using everything from simple slip stitches to double crochets—you’ll create an elegant granny square that’s surprisingly quick and undeniably lovely.

You’ll find the Rustic Christmas Granny Square to be a mindful make, perfect for a short respite from the crazy pace of the holiday season.

The Rustic Christmas Granny Square builds beautiful depth with a new color introduced in each round. I’m not always a fan of changing colors every round but this beautiful granny square design just begs for the rich colors we chose.

Any worsted weight yarn will work. For a budget-friendly option, shop your yarn collection and use up some of those valuable leftovers.

Create your own color scheme with what you already have or splurge on new yarn in a specially curated color scheme.

A Very Cottage Christmas Crochet Along

A Very Cottage Christmas crochet along - a free blog-style event

A Very Cottage Christmas was created as a gentle pause—an invitation to breathe deeply and find a moment of calm in the midst of holiday chaos. When the season feels overwhelming, you can slip into the mindfulness of stitching beautiful granny squares, giving yourself space to regroup, recharge, and reconnect with the joy of making.

We wanted something simple, festive, and heartwarming to celebrate the season—something that would bring handmade charm into your home without adding stress, pressure, or extra expense. From that desire for ease and comfort, A Very Cottage Christmas was born.
