Because of my love for granny squares, I wanted to design a crochet heart that has the traditional granny square at its heart (see what I did there?).

The first 2 rounds of the 3-round crochet heart are modified to mimic the shape of a heart shape. By working corner spaces that aren’t the same number of chains, the crochet heart starts to take shape.

The third round uses differing stitch heights to create the top of the heart. The result of the modified granny square is a cute crochet heart.

With 2 identical crochet hearts sewn together, Granny’s Heart Keychain is a soft, textured token of love that’s as nostalgic as it is practical.

This crochet heart keychain is perfect for using scraps from your stash. Any DK or sport weight yarn will work and give you the finished size called for in the instructions below.

The samples were made with Stylecraft “Special DK”, a beautiful DK weight acrylic yarn with over 100 available colors. I love it so much that I’ve used it for a variety of projects.

Stacked single crochet (STsc) – (This stitch is used at the beginning of a row or round to replace the traditional turning ch-3. It has the appearance of a dc.) – Insert hook in the same st as the loop, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (bottom sc made), insert hook in the left vertical bar of the bottom sc, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (top sc made).

  1. A ch-2 or ch-3 may be substituted for the STsc at any time.
  2. Do not turn after any rnd. The right side of the heart will always be facing you.
  3. Rnd 2: Only one of the four corner spaces is “ch 3” to form the lower point of the heart.

Make 2 hearts for the keychain.

Rnd 3: No ch, sc in the same st, sc in the ch-1 sp and next 3 sts, sc in the next ch-1 corner sp, 9 tr in the next ch-1 sp, slip st in the next ch-1 corner sp, 9 tr in the next ch-1 sp, sc in the next ch-1 corner sp, sc in the next 3 sts, sc in the ch-1 sp, sc in the next 3 sts, 4 sc in the ch-3 corner sp, sc in the next 2 sts, join with slip st to beg st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

For the Keychain

To ensure the heart holds up against repeated use and retains its shape, make 2 identical hearts.

  • Hold the 2 hearts with wrong sides together (the outer loops are slanted toward you).
  • Thread a length of yarn onto the tapestry needle.
  • Attach the end of the yarn tail to the slip st between the groups of 9 tr, catching only the back loops (the loops touching each other) of each heart.
  • Whip stitch the 2 hearts together. Be sure the stitches are lined up and you are working through the back loops only of each heart.
  • When you’ve stitched around to the starting slip st, fasten off securely, and weave in the ends. Be sure the ends are hidden.
  • Attach the keychain in the same place, between the groups of 9 tr.
