5 Things Every Crocheter Should Know

5 Things Every Crocheter Should Know | MadameStitch

Whether you’ve been crocheting for a bazillion years or you just started, there are a few things you need to know.  Listen up, ’cause it’s gonna get real!

You WILL become obsessed.

I’m not kidding…really, I’m not.  Ambivalence is not an option.  Once you start to crochet, you will carry it with you everywhere you go.  Have a few minutes to kill?  You better have that crochet with you because you will rue the day you missed getting in a few stitches.  I never go anywhere without at least popping my crochet into the car…just in case!  It’s a rare meeting, sporting event or parent pick-up where my hands are empty.  God forbid…

It’s really OK to frog.

No one likes to rip out.  But sometimes ya just gotta.  And that’s OK!

See this beauty here?  Well, I started this a couple of years ago and, like some things, it got put aside.  This year I decided to pull it out and finish it up.  But, wait!  In the interim, I lost 35 lbs.  Sounds like a wonderful thing, right?  Yes and no.  The bad part was that this cardigan, the body of which I had already finished, was way too big.  So, I frogged this puppy all the way back to the first 18 rows.  That hurt a lot.  Not to worry, though.  I’ve finished the body once again and it fits this time!

Every gift you give from now on will involve crochet.

I remember when my kids were growing up and it came time for teachers’ gifts.  I was also a counted cross-stitcher at the time and every gift involved either that or crochet.  All the other parents would give potted plants or pictures.  Not me.  I mean, how could I give something so generic?!

These days, my family is the recipient of all my crafty goodness.  I have to say that it brings me such joy to know that my gifts are appreciated even by my grandkids.  At least I think so…

No matter how much yarn you have, a bit more won’t hurt.

That’s right.  You may have more projects and patterns than you could possibly finish in a lifetime (or longer) but you still need to have that mohair silk blend that just got stocked at your LYS.  This is my business and I truly can’t control myself.  I’m a sucker for a yarn haul!  I especially love trying out the wares of indie yarn dyers and discovering ones I’ve never met before.  But, I can’t walk into Hobby Lobby if I want to save my budget…

And, finally, not everyone will care about crochet as much as you do.

I’m sorry to say, it’s true.  Someone will ask me about the project I’ve brought along (remember the first point I made) and I will launch into a veritable dissertation about the yarn, the color, the construction.  Then I notice the glassy-eyed look I’m getting and realize I’ve gone too far.  Should have just said, “I’m making a scarf.  Isn’t it pretty?”  And, I’ll probably be the only person checking out where the local yarn shops are before finding lodging for my next travel adventure.  Priorities, anyone?

Let the haters hate and the judgers judge.  You are a crocheter now and that’s a good thing!

I don’t know what I’d do without crochet.  I’m a proud, addicted member of the crochet community.  I hope you are, too!
