A cozy granny stitch sampler blanket to snuggle away your cares

There’s nothing better than snuggling under a gorgeous granny stitch sampler blanket when the weather turns cold or you just need a handmade hug.

The Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket

A Collaborative Crochet Along

The Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket Crochet Along

I love granny squares because they’re so versatile and have timeless appeal. I find any excuse to make granny squares.

But, what if we took the granny stitch, the groups of 3 double crochet that are the cornerstone of the traditional granny square, and asked some fabulouse designers to create something unique with it?

That’s exactly what I did for the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket! The result is an absolutely gorgeous, snuggle-worthy blanket you won’t be able to resist!

The best part: you can crochet your very own Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket absolutely free just by joining in the crochet along.

What is a free crochet along?

Participating in a free crochet along is such a special experience. If you’ve never been a part of one, here’s what you can expect when you join a free crochet along.

  • Everyone crochets the same project at the same time.
  • Each part of the project is released one at a time. That way all of the participants can work at the same pace.
  • The fun part comes when everyone is sharing progress photos with the group. It’s so motivating!

The Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket Design

What is a granny stitch? The typical interpretation is 3 double crochet worked in the same stitch or space, taken from the traditional granny square.

In this granny stitch sampler blanket, my friends and I have bent the rules a little. I asked each designer to design a 12” square that included the granny stitch somewhere in the design. They were free to use any combination of stitches or a technique they wanted.

A list of the designers involved in the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket

No two squares are alike. I encourage you to treat yourself to a crochet journey that will end with a beautiful granny stitch sampler blanket you’ll treasure for years to come.

Finished Size: Each square is intended to be 12”. However, they may land in a range of 12.5-13”. You can adjust the size of each square during blocking to ensure they are all approximately the same size.

Sample Blanket Size: Approx. 41″ x 53″ (Your blanket may be slightly smaller or larger depending upon the size of your finished squares, the seaming method you choose, and the number of rounds for your border.)

We pride ourselves in providing you with the very best patterns in order for your crocheting experience to be as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

While we as designers have our patterns thoroughly checked before hitting “Publish”, we’re only human. Sometimes, mistakes make it through regardless of all the checks and balances. We hope you’ll grant us some grace!

All right…let’s get down to business!

It’s time to gather all the yarn you’ll need for your blanket. The yarn I have listed here is what I used to make the sample. However, individual square patterns will list the yarns and amounts the designer used for the original square design.

The Yarn

Color A (CA)

Lion Brand “Pound of Love” 100% premium acrylic worsted (16oz/1020yd; 454g/932m) in Antique White (#099B) – 1 skein

Color B (CB)

Lion Brand “Pound of Love” 100% premium acrylic worsted (16oz/1020yd; 454g/932m) in Terracotta (#134A) – 1 skein

Color C (CC)

Knit Picks “Brava Worsted” 100% premium acrylic worsted (218yd; 100g) – Peacock or Tidepool (These colors are interchangeable) – 2-3 skeins depending upon how much you use for the border.

Note: I used all of both skeins of the Pound of Love. If you don’t want to purchase a second skein and have a ton of yarn left over, find a substitute that matches the colors you’ve chosen and use it in the border.

The Hooks

You’ll need at least 2 hooks to make this granny stitch sampler blanket. You may need others if you have to adjust for gauge.

  • US size H-8 (5mm) or size needed to achieve gauge for each square
  • US size I-9 (5.5mm) for the slip stitch seam and the border

Other Tools

  • Blocking boards and pins
  • Removable stitch markers

Gauge is listed in each square pattern. Make sure you check gauge with each new square to ensure all 12 squares are within .5” of each other. Blocking will take care of the rest.

Skill level: Confident beginner to Intermediate. The blanket is suitable for crocheters of all skill levels. Some squares may employ techniques that are a bit more advanced but all are within the same range of difficulty.

Will I be able to purchase the PDF for the full pattern?

Yes, you will!

The full pattern is now available for purchase for $12.99 through the month of October. At the end of the crochet along, the price will increase so grab your copy now!

General Information

Abbreviations – US crochet terminology

  • beg – beginning
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rnd(s) – round(s)
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • YO – yarn over
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side

Special Stitches

Granny stitch (GS) – 3 dc in the same st or sp

Stacked single crochet (STsc) – (This stitch is used at the beginning of a row or round to replace the traditional turning ch-3. It has the appearance of a dc.) – Insert hook in same st as loop, YO, draw up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (bottom sc made), insert hook in left vertical bar of bottom sc, YO, draw up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (top sc made).

Blocking

It’s highly recommended that you block each and every square. Blocking ensures that each square is approx. the same size. It will also open up the stitches and show off that fabulous texture!

For the sample, steam blocking was used. You may use the method of your choice and the one that works best for the yarn you’ve chosen.

Pattern Notes

  1. Before beginning each new square: Read through the entire pattern. Make a gauge swatch or work the number of rounds for gauge. Practice any stitches or techniques you aren’t familiar with.
  2. Each square pattern includes all of the information you need to make the square.
  3. For questions about a particular square, reach out to the individual designer.

Assembly and Seaming for the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket

The square numbers in this chart correspond to the order in which the squares were released.

Be sure you’ve blocked each square to the appropriate size before beginning assembly.

How to assemble the blanket

  • Lay out the squares according to the chart above. When you look at the laid out squares, they should all be right side showing with the stitch patterns oriented in the correct direction so you’re looking at them top to bottom.
  • Using a slip stitch seam (see below), begin with Squares 3 & 6..
  • Sew all horizontal seams first, then sew the vertical seams.
  • Do not weave in the ends. They can be carried under the Border and subsequently secured once the Border is complete.

Tips for a successful slip stitch seam

  • Use the I-9 (5.5mm) hook or a hook size that allows for moderately loose stitches.
  • Check to be sure all of the slip stitches are the same size as you work.
  • Adjacent squares may have a slightly different number of stitches along the sides being sewn together. You may have to double up a few slip stitches to ensure that the corners of the squares line up at the intersections of the seams (aka the square corners).

How to slip stitch the seams of the blanket

  • Start at the upper right hand corner of the Assembly chart to slip stitch the 1st horizontal seam.
  • Hold the bottom edge of Square 6 against the upper edge of Square 3 (which should be facing you as you work the seam).
  • Attach yarn to the upper right hand corner through the back loops only (the loops touching each other) of both squares.
  • Insert hook through the same sts and draw up a loop.
  • Insert hook through the loops of the next st and work a slip st.
  • Continue working slip sts across the squares to the next corner.
  • When you reach the next corner, pick up the next 2 squares and continue slip stitching across to the opposite corner.
  • Repeat the above step to complete the 1st horizontal seam.
  • Fasten off at the end of the seam.

Continue by seaming the remaining 2 horizontal seams, then sew the vertical seams.

Border Instructions

The border of the granny stitch sampler blanket

Yarn: Approx. 1.7oz (110yds) is needed for each rnd of the border.

Note: Use the 5.5mm (US size I-9) hook for the border. RS should always be facing you.

Rnd 1: With RS facing, attach CA to any corner, ch 1, 3 sc in the same st, [sc in next st and in each st across to next corner st, 3 sc in the corner] 3 times, sc in next st and in each st across to 1st corner, join with slip st to beg st, slip st in next st (the middle st of the 3 sc).

Note: The corner is defined as the middle st of the 3 sc worked at each corner in Rnd 1.

Rnd 2: (STsc, 2 dc, ch 3, GS) in the same st, {[sk 2, GS in the next st] across to next corner st, (GS, ch 3, GS) in corner st} 3 times, [sk 2, GS in the next st] across to 1st corner, join with slip st to beg st. Fasten off.

Note: The GS of Rnds 3 & 4 are worked in the sp between GS of the rnd before, where a ch-1 sp would normally be.

Rnd 3: Attach CC to any corner sp, (STsc, 2 dc, ch 3, GS) in the same sp, [GS in next sp and in each sp across to next corner sp, (GS, ch 3, GS) in corner] 3 times, GS in next sp and in each sp across to 1st corner, join with slip st to beg st. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: Attach CB to any corner sp, rep Rnd 3.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

  5. I went to play the video on youtube this is what showed up when I clicked on it.
http://www.youtube.com is blockedwww.youtube.com refused to connect.
    ERR_BLOCKED_BY_RESPONSE

I have never had that happen before. I did some other patterns on other site and had to problem. So I don’t know why are blocking your patterns.
    I found it very strange.

    1. Kim,
I’m sorry you’re having trouble playing the video. The only video I have on the post is for the Stacked single crochet.

All of my videos are set to public. The video should play right there on the blog post or in YouTube. I have checked it out and everything seems to be working.

If all else fails, visit my YouTube channel (@madamestitchcrochet) and you’ll find the video there.

  6. Why is Square 9 protected that you can not copy and paste into a word doc? All other squares you were able to do. To me that is the free pattern.

    1. Teresa,
The designer may have turned off your ability to copy and paste to protect her copyrighted material. The free pattern has always been “free to view on the designer’s post” which is stated clearly throughout.

You can still participate free of charge by keeping a tab open to the square pattern of your choice.
      -Debbie

    1. Marti,
The patterns for the CAL have not been free to download. The intent is to offer the pattern free to view on the designer’s blog.

If you prefer a download, you’ll need to purchase the square pattern if it’s available or purchase the full blanket pattern.
      -Debbie

  7. I have copied and pasted each pattern thus far and emailed it to myself. Square #9 will not let me do that.
    Can this be changed please?
    Thanks for your time.
    I’m enjoying this project!
    Tammy

    1. Tammy,
I’m so glad you’re part of the crochet along!

The copy/paste function as I understand it is a site-wide setting. I doubt the designer would be able to turn it off for just one post. However, check with the designer. That would be your best bet!
      -Debbie

  8. This CAL is not a free CAL as the ladies suppying the patterns are not allowing us to download their squares . I feel they should not participate in this project.

    1. Marie,
The definition of the word “free” is “without cost or payment”. This CAL is free because every part of the blanket from start to finish is available at absolutely no cost to the maker. The only obligation the designers in the CAL have is to provide their square’s instructions free on their blog.

Nowhere is it promised that you can copy and paste, print from the browser, or download a free PDF. Even so, the full crochet along – from start to finish – is indeed free to participate and make the beautiful Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket.

Unlike other CALs you may have participated in, we have chosen not to give away our PDFs. Instead, the pattern PDFs + the full pattern PDF are available for purchase to compensate the designers for their hours of hard work and their expertise.

I am proud to have each and every talented designer in this CAL. Their beautiful work is why the Granny Stitch Sampler Blanket exists.

      Best,
      Debbie

  9. I have tried to pull up square #8 (flora granny square) it keeps coming back contents not found. I was able to get all the rest. Does someone have that pattern that can send to me please or show me where to get it. It doesn’t work in designer post either

    1. Sheila,
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are working on a solution and will update the post as soon as any issues have been resolved.

      I appreciate your patience!
      -Debbie
