An easy men’s linen stitch scarf becomes your guy’s favorite crochet accessory

Wrap him in rugged warmth and effortless style with this easy-to-make men’s linen stitch scarf that feels as good as it looks.

The Men’s Linen Stitch Pattern Scarf

Men are difficult to crochet for, IMHO!  Pretty much all designs are aimed at women because women are the majority of crocheters and consumers of crochet objects.  I personally haven’t tried much for men.  However, last Christmas I decided I needed to make something for my husband.  We’ve been married a long time and I can count on one hand how many items I’ve made for him.  That’s probably against the marriage vows, right?!!!

I love this men’s linen stitch scarf because it’s such a classy traditional look without a lot of flash. That’s exactly what my husband is looking for. It fits his conservative style while wrapping him in warmth when the weather gets cold.

There’s something about the right scarf that makes a man stand a little taller. Wrap him in rugged warmth and effortless style with this easy-to-make crochet scarf that feels as good as it looks. Whether he’s heading out for a winter hike or grabbing coffee in town, this men’s linen stitch scarf adds just the right touch of laid-back confidence.

Crocheted using the linen stitch for a dense, modern texture and stitched in a warm, cozy worsted weight yarn, this scarf is the perfect balance of function and fashion. Its generous length allows for a cozy double wrap on the coldest days, and its clean, classic lines make it equally suited for casual weekends or polished nights out.

The crochet linen stitch is a beginner friendly stitch pattern. Alternating single crochets and chain spaces creates a beautiful woven effect. Pair that with an easy 2-row repeat and you have a winning combination for a truly mindful make.

If you’ve never done the linen stitch before, I have a blog post all about the linen stitch you can check out HERE.

Worsted weight yarn works really well for this men’s linen stitch scarf. It provides just the right thickness to give the linen stitch structure while giving the scarf beautiful drape.

I chose Lion Brand’s “Heartland” because it’s:

  • An easy-to-care-for acrylic – pop it in a mesh laundry bag, wash it with your regular loads, lay flat to dry.
  • 100% acrylic that feels great against the skin and avoids most allergies.
  • Economical – Each skein has a generous 250 yds and the price point is affordable.
  • Easy to find just the right color, one that he’ll absolutely love.
  • Warm and cozy for the right amount of coverage when the wind blows.

About the Color

The original Men’s Linen Stitch Scarf was worked in Black Canyon because I wanted a scarf that matched my husband’s black wool coat.

The pattern is now updated to include a striped version. You’ll need 1 skein each of Mount Rainier (gray) and Glacier Bay (blue)

Like I said, it’s easy to customize this men’s linen stitch scarf, especially when it comes to the colors. With 30 rows to work with, you can create any striped version you like. Purchase the premium PDF for a complete customization guide for your scarf.

Color #153 (Black Canyon) – 2 skeins (The yarn requirements for the striped version are in the premium PDF)

Any cozy worsted weight yarn will work

Hook

  • US size I-9 (5.5mm) for the scarf
  • US size H-8 (5mm) for the foundation chain

Tools

  • Removable stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Finished Size

Approx. 74″ x 6.5″

Gauge

17 sc x 18 rows = 4″

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

  • ch – chain
  • rep – repeat
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Note: The following instructions are for the solid color scarf only. The instructions for the striped version and a complete customization guide are included in the premium PDF.

  1. The ch-1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  2. The foundation chain will be looser than the linen stitch itself.  Therefore, I recommend using the smaller hook listed for the foundation chain.  This will keep the bottom edge from bowing out once the linen stitch portion is made.
  3. Because the number of chains to start is so great, use removeable stitch markers placed at regular intervals to keep track of counting.
  4. The scarf is worked lengthwise from side to side.
  5. Because of the nature of the linen stitch, the fabric is reversible with no right or wrong side.

With smaller hook, ch 304.  Switch to larger hook to continue.

Row 1:  Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, [ch 1, sk 1, sc in the next ch] across, turn. < 152 sc, 151 ch-1 sp >

Row 2:  Ch 1, sc in the same st and in the ch-1 sp, [ch 1, sc in the next ch-1 sp] across to the last st, sc in the last st, turn. < 154 sc, 149 ch-1 sp >

Row 3:  Ch 1, sc in the same st, [ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp] across, working the final sc in the last st of the previous row, turn. < 152 sc, 151 ch-1 sp >

Rows 4-29: Rep Rows 2 & 3 13 times.

Row 30: Rep Row 2.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Block if necessary.
