The Crossbody Smartphone Pouch is a free pattern, perfect for yarn stash busting.  Make a fashion statement while providing your smartphone with a safe, sturdy place to hang out.  The free pattern is crochet beginner-friendly, quick to work up, and you’ll learn a new stitch (reverse single crochet or “crab” stitch).

This free pattern was born out of necessity.  You see, most of what I wear, aside from jeans, has no pockets.  And, even some of my denim has such skinny pockets, my smartphone couldn’t possibly fit in them.  If it’s a dress, all bets are off!  I’m sorry, but why is it that guys get all the functional pockets and my leggings are woefully lacking?

Last year, I attended a conference where I was expected to have my smartphone on me all the time.  I knew my professional attire (mostly dresses) wouldn’t have adequate pockets to keep my smartphone safe.  So, I whipped up the Crossbody Smartphone Pouch!  I never had to worry about where to put my phone and having it at the ready!

How many times have YOU been caught without pockets for storing your phone?  Like me, you’ve probably tried to find a case with some sort of strap.  The only thing I found was that apparently I have expensive taste 🙄 Anyway, my yarn stash has provided me with an inexpensive way to solve the problem and yours will too.

You’ll love this simple pouch.  It’s beginner friendly; the only stitches you’ll need to know are chain, single crochet and reverse single crochet.  Don’t worry about that last one – I’ll show you how to do it!

The pouch portion is worked in continuous rounds, amigurumi style.  The long crossbody strap is worked lengthwise and attached to the pouch.  You may sew a button to the front and work a chain loop on the back edge for a more secure optional closure.

The Yarn

I chose Scheepjes “Stone-Washed” because I love the weathered, cozy look of the yarn.  The tonal colors are beautiful and the yarn lovely to work with.  I’ve use it for a number of other projects!  I order this yarn from The Wool Warehouse in the UK which sadly, during this time, has stopped all international orders.  When international shipping resumes, I highly recommend trying Stone-Washed.

This yarn is 78% cotton and 22% acrylic sport weight, giving it more pliability and drape than 100% cotton.  If you’re substituting yarn from your yarn stash, I would choose a light DK weight in acrylic rather than cotton.  You’ll more likely achieve gauge and your pouch will be just as sturdy and easy-care.

Here’s what you need…

Yarn:  You’ll need approx. 100 yd (33g) of DK weight yarn.  Choose a second complimentary color if you’d like to make the middle row be a contrasting color.  Be adventuresome!

Hook:  US size G-6 (4mm)

Tools and extra stuff:  You’ll need a 1″ button if you choose to include the optional closure.  You’ll also need removable stitch markers (2) and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Measure your smartphone (plus case)

Everyone’s smartphone (and case if you use one) is a different size.  For the safety of the phone, the pouch should fit snugly enough to keep the phone from dropping out without making it hard to access your phone.

I used my iPhone 10 with Otterbox case as the model for my crossbody.  Here’s how to measure your phone and customize your pouch: Measure around the width of your phone and case.  If yours is smaller than the finished size listed, subtract a chain or two from the foundation chain.  Likewise, if yours is larger, add a chain or two.  I suggest you work a few rows to be sure the phone fits in the pouch snugly.

For the pouch, ch 15.

Rnd 1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to the last st, 3 sc in last st, turn work 180 degrees to work along the opposite side of the ch, sc in each ch across, 2 sc in 1st ch. (30 sc)

Rnd 2:  Sc in next sc, pm, sc in each st around. (30)

Rep rnd 2 until the height of the pouch measures just longer than the phone, extending approx. 1/4 – 1/2″ longer than the height of the phone.  Mm each rnd to indicate the 1st st of each rnd.  At the end of the final rnd, slip st to 1st st of rnd. Remove the marker, do not FO, continue to Edging.

Edging instructions

Note:  If you are adding a button and loop for secure closure, place a marker in the center stitch along the top back edge (the opposite side from where you are now).  This will mark the stitch to skip when working the chain loop.

Place the marker in the back center stitch.

With loop: Continuing with right side facing, ch 1, rsc in same st and in each st around to st before marker, ch 15, sc in st after marker, rsc in each st around to end of rnd, join with slip st to beg st, FO, weave in ends.

Without loop: Continuing with right side facing, ch 1, rsc in same st and in each st around, join with slip st to beg st, FO, weave in ends.

Strap

Note: The strap can be worked in the same color or row 2 can be worked in a contrasting color.  The strap length can be adjusted by increasing/decreasing the number of chain you start with.  However, be careful that the strap is not worked too long because it will stretch when the phone is in the pouch.

Ch 181 (leave a long tail for sewing end to pouch)

Row 1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (180)

Row 2:  Ch 1, sc in same st and in each st across, turn.

Row 3:  Rep row 2.  FO and leave long tail for sewing end to pouch.

Attach strap to outside of pouch: Mark the center of each side with a stitch marker where the strap ends will be attached.  Using the long tail, sew about 1″ of the strap end to the center of the pouch side, Do the same with the other end of the strap being careful not to twist the strap before it’s attached.
