The Bianca Crochet Boot Cuffs

Creating a pair of crochet boot cuffs need be no more difficult than crocheting a hat. The Bianca Boot Cuffs are no exception.

Begin with a ribbing cuff that’s worked entirely of single crochets in the back loop only. Without cutting the yarn, you’ll proceed directly to the body of the cuff.

The main feature of these beautiful crochet boot cuffs is its unusual texture. The Puffs & Grannies of the cuff body, an easily worked stitch pattern, provides cozy texture that feels intentional and chic.

While the stitch pattern looks complicated and intricate, it’s actually quite simple and intuitive, featuring the granny stitch, the puff stitch and the crossed granny stitch. None of these stitches are complicated alone and their combination in the Puffs & Grannies 4-round repeat creates endless visual interest and texture.

These crochet boot cuffs can be worked in any worsted weight yarn you choose. Because of the beautiful texture of the Puffs & Grannies pattern in the body of the cuff, you’ll want a yarn with just a little halo so the stitch definition shines through. Plus, a bit of stretch is essential for these crochet boot cuffs for the perfect fit.

Lion Brand “Heartland” 100% premium acrylic worsted weight (5oz/251yd; 142g/230m)

Lion Brand’s Heartland is my all-time favorite choice for so many crochet projects. The beautifully curated selection of colors, all based on iconic American landmarks, gives you a  wide array to choose from. The yarn itself is soft to work with and has just enough of the necessary stretch for these crochet boot cuffs.

While Lion Brand recommends a 5.5 mm hook for Heartland, I used a 5mm (US size H-8) hook instead. The smaller hook size ensures the right amount of structure, especially for the body of the cuff.

  • Measure around the widest part of the calf. This is approx. where the top of the boot sits, just below the knee.
  • Choose the size closest to your calf measurement.

Gauge

  • Body: Rows 3-9 in pattern x 14 dc = approx. 4″
  • Ribbing: 8 rows x 8 sc BLO = approx. 2″

Skill Level: Intermediate

  • beg – beginning
  • BLO – back loop only
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat
  • rnd(s) – round(s)
  • sc – single crochet

  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side
  • YO – yarn over

Repeats

  • (โ€ฆ) โ€“ Work everything within the parentheses in the same st or sp.
  • [โ€ฆ] โ€“ Repeat everything within the brackets the indicated number of times.

Stitch counts (and variations for sizes) are listed as follows: < S (M, L) > OR S (M, L)

Special Stitches

Chain-3 space (ch-3 sp) – A space formed by 3 ch which will be worked into in the next rnd.

Crossed Granny Stitch (crossed GS) – sk st, dc in the next 2 sts, dc in the skipped st. These 3 dc are worked over the 3 dc of the GS below.

Granny stitch (GS) – 3 dc in the same sp or st

Invisible join: At the end of the rnd, remove working loop from hook, insert hook from back to front through the top of the 1st st of the rnd, add working loop back onto hook and pull through to the WS of the cuff, continue as instructed.

Puff – [YO, insert hook in indicated st] 3 times, YO, pull through all the loops on the hook.

Single crochet in the 3rd loop (sc 3lp) – when working on the front side of the stitches from the round before โ€“ Insert hook through the 3rd loop that sits just under and behind the top loop of the indicated stitch, YO, pull through 3rd loop, YO, pull through both loops on the hook to complete the sc.

Stacked single crochet (STsc) โ€“ (This stitch is used at the beginning of a row or round to replace the traditional turning ch-3. It has the appearance of a dc.) โ€“ Insert hook in same st as loop, YO, draw up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (bottom sc made), insert hook in left vertical bar of bottom sc, YO, draw up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (top sc made).

  1. A “ch-1” at the beg of a row or rnd does not count as a st.
  2. A “ch-2” or “ch-3” may be substituted for the STsc at any time if you prefer.
  3. Pay close attention to when the instructions say to “turn” or “do not turn“.
  4. Each cuff is worked in one piece without cutting the yarn.

Ribbing

Row 1: Fsc 10 OR ch 11, sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn. < 10 sc >

Rows 2-42 (51, 57): Ch 1, sc BLO in the same st and in each st across. < 10 sc BLO >

The ribbing should measure approx. 2.5″ wide x 10.5 (13, 14.25)” before stretching. The sc BLO is stretchy and should easily expand to fit your calf comfortably. However, you may want to try it on (without wearing your boot) to see if you need to make any adjustments.

Do not fasten off. Bring the ends together with Row 1 behind the final row worked. Slip st the ends together, working through the beg ch of Row 1 and the back loop of Row 42 (51, 57). At the end of the seam, do not fasten off. Turn so the seam is on the inside of the ribbing. Proceed to the Body.

Body

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, sc in each row end around, join with slip st to beg st, do not turn. < 42 (51, 57) sc >

Rnd 4 (WS): Slip st into the ch-3 sp, (STsc, 2 dc) in the same sp (counts as the 1st GS), GS in the next ch-3 sp and in each ch-3 sp around, join with slip st to beg st, turn. < 14 (17, 19) GS >

Rnd 5 (RS): Slip st into the next 2 sts, [STsc, dc in the next st, dc in the 1st slip st that was skipped] (counts as the 1st crossed GS), crossed GS in each GS around, join with slip st to beg st, turn. < 14 (17, 19) crossed GS >

Rnd 6 (WS): STsc, dc in the next st and in each st around, join with slip st to beg st, turn. < 42 (51, 57) dc >

How to Wear the Boot Cuff

  • The Cuff should be RS out.
  • With the Ribbing going on first, pull the Cuff on over your boot.
  • Fold the Ribbing to the WS and tuck into your boot.
  • The Body of the Cuff should drape over the top of your boot with the Ribbing hidden inside your boot.
