The Cordelia Crochet Washcloth Free Pattern

I know a lot of crocheters love to crochet washcloths because it’s a great way to learn and practice new stitches and techniques in a small, manageable project. With each new crochet washcloth, makers can experiment with different stitches, textures, and color combinations, gradually expanding their crochet repertoire.

The practicality of a crochet washcloth also ensures that what you’ve just learned is put to use in everyday items, making the learning process both enjoyable and rewarding.

A crochet washcloth is also a wonderful way to provide an eco-friendly alternative to disposable products. Made with a sturdy worsted weight cotton which you probably already have in your stash, a crochet washcloth will last through repeated use and laundering.

Adopting a “reuse, reduce, recycle” mentality can sometimes seem futile if those around you aren’t doing the same thing. However, every little bit really does help. A crochet washcloth is the perfect way to do your part.

Then there are those crocheters who simply love to treat themselves to a little daily luxury by using a crochet washcloth that’s soft and gentle against the skin. A crochet washcloth adds heightened style to your bathroom and provides a rich addition to an otherwise dull routine.

Whatever your reason for making a crochet washcloth, the Cordelia Washcloth will quickly become one of your favorites!

In 2022 I designed the Cordelia Bandana Cowl and the Cordelia Infinity Scarf to add to my transitional weather wardrobe. I absolutely fell in love with the stitch pattern that combined the granny stitch with the half double crochet worked in the 3rd loop.

In 2023, I designed the Cordelia Placemat, a granny stitch placemat that uses the same stitch and pattern combination.

This year, I’ve put together a crochet washcloth (and it’s companions the Cordelia Soap Cozy and the Cordelia Face Scrubbie) that uses the same stitch pattern.

The unique look of the beautiful projects in the Cordelia collection is achieved by mixing stitches and textures. Sections of the half double crochet and it’s close relative, the camel stitch (better known as the half double crochet in the 3rd loop), alternating with my beloved granny stitch, is the cornerstone of all the Cordelia projects.

Never worked the camel stitch? Here’s a great tutorial by Made by Gootie!

The Cordelia Washcloth is the latest addition to the collection, utilizing the same stitch patterns in a generously sized crochet washcloth. The camel stitch creates just the subtle texture you need for gentle scrubbing. And, my personal favorite, the granny stitch, is the star of the show, offsetting the closed surface of the half double crochet sections.

Any worsted weight cotton will work for this beautiful crochet washcloth. It’s a great stash busting project. However, be reminded that worsted weight cottons will vary slightly in thickness so be sure to check your gauge if you want a 10” square washcloth.

I chose Lion Brand’s “24/7 Cotton” mainly because I had a skein in my stash. But, I do love the feel of the yarn – it adds such a soft touch to the finished crochet washcloth. The available colors are rich and vibrant, adding a beautiful look to your bathroom décor.

Abbreviations – US crochet terminology

  • beg – beginning
  • ch – chain

  • hdc – half double crochet
  • rep – repeat

  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches

Foundation half double crochet (Fhdc) – To start the row, ch 2, YO, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 1 loop (this forms the chain along the bottom), YO, pull through 3 loops on hook (hdc made).

All other Fhdc in the row: YO, insert hook under ch at bottom of previous st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 1 loop (this forms the chain along the bottom), YO, pull through 3 loops on hook (hdc made).

Half double crochet in the 3rd loop (hdc 3lp) – when you’ve turned and are working on the back side of the stitches from the row before – YO, insert hook through the 3rd loop that sits just under the top loop of the stitch, YO, pull through 3rd loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook to complete the hdc.

Single crochet in the 3rd loop (sc 3lp) – Insert hook through the 3rd loop that sits just under the top loop of the stitch, YO, pull through 3rd loop, YO, pull through both loops on hook to complete the sc.

Granny stitch (GS) – 3 dc in the same st or sp

Invisible join: At the end of the rnd, remove working loop from hook, insert hook from back to front through the top of the 1st st of the rnd, add working loop back onto hook, and pull through to the WS, continue as instructed. Note: An invisible join is used in the Border section to hide the seam when working the stitches in the 3rd loop.

Stacked single crochet (STsc) – (This stitch is used at the beginning of a row or round to replace the traditional turning ch-3. It has the appearance of a dc.) – Insert hook in same st as loop, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (bottom sc made), insert hook in left vertical bar of bottom sc, YO, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops (top sc made).

Pattern Notes

  1. Because there are no ch-1 spaces between the granny stitches, the granny stitch is worked in the space where that ch-1 sp would have been, between GS groups from the previous row.
  2. The Fhdc may tend to be tight. If so, use a size larger hook for Row 1 only.
  3. A ch-1 at the beg of a row does not count as a st.
  4. While the STsc gives the edge of the square a straighter edge, a ch-2 or ch-3 may be substituted at any time without altering the construction of the square.
