The temperature in the spring can be all over the place. One day it can be almost shorts weather with the windows thrown open. And, the very next day, we can be bundling up like it’s winter again. The transitional seasons – spring and fall – are perfect for lightweight, full-size afghans. They can provide just the right amount of warmth without making you feel like you’re in a sauna.

The Garden Posy Granny Afghan takes the traditional granny square and adds a little alteration to look just like a simple ‘posy’ plucked from your garden. The generous size means you’re covered head to toe. While the temperatures are still too cool for spring planting, you can enjoy a little of your beautiful garden while you relax under the Garden Posy Granny Afghan.

Inspiration + Design

Spring is easily my favorite season of the year. Before the leaves have even thought about peeping out, tiny colorful flowers emerge to brighten the brown landscape. I wanted to capture this gorgeous time of year in one cozy, colorful blanket.

I’m always looking for ways to incorporate the traditional granny square in any project I’m planning. The granny square is such a versatile design element, lending itself to so many interpretations to fit the mood of the design.

For the square centers, I chose colors that could be found in the many blooming spring flowers. They range from the most vibrant deep pink to subtle yellows. The main color, Duck Egg, is reminiscent of the greening grass as it wakes from its winter sleep.

The 63 6-round granny squares are joined using a slip stitch. No sewing necessary! Because the squares are crocheted together, the blanket can be assembled quickly. And, the simple single crochet border highlights the beautiful ‘posy’ colors and integrates the overall look.

Let’s talk about the yarn.

There are loads of choices when it comes to DK weight acrylic yarn. I’ll list a couple of alternatives later in the post. But, I’m in love with the look and feel of Stylecraft’s “Special DK”. The colors are vibrant and the yarn is soft with a beautiful drape. It’s an inexpensive choice for this large project. With 100 shades available, you’re sure to find the colors you like for your own Garden Posy Granny Afghan.

I’ve found it to be one of the most affordable yarns on the market. It’s available through the Wool Warehouse in the UK. I’ve always had good luck with order fulfillment. The orders are packed quickly and the yarn has arrived in a reasonable amount of time. I haven’t found any other distributor who carries ALL of the shades – I highly recommend working with them.

I chose acrylic to make this blanket easy care and durable. It provides enough warmth but isn’t as warm as animal fibers can be. However, you can choose any DK weight with any fiber you like. It’s that versatile!

Here are a couple of my favorite alternatives:

I know any combination would look good together, but I really like the ones you have chosen!
And part of the problem is I am going to order on line from the wool warehouse. And the colors can be a bit off.
