Sometimes you just need something small to carry all of your essentials like your phone, cash and cards plus sunglasses, when you’re popping out of the house for a quick errand. This granny square drawstring bag is just the ticket and will come in handy when you want to step out in style.

I love adding granny squares to a lot of what I design because I love the look of a basic granny square and the design possibilities is offers. Plus, it’s just a lot of fun to make!

While some think the basic granny square is bland, this granny square drawstring bag is here to prove them wrong. Those little granny squares add a pop of color and visual interest to an otherwise fairly plain pouch bag.

Depending upon what colors you choose, the Briar Rose bag is perfect for girls and adults alike. The size is perfect for any age and makes a great gift for that next birthday or holiday get-together.

Design + Construction

As I said, the size of the Briar Rose bag makes it appropriate for both girls and adults alike. It’s a modest 9” tall from base to top of the shell edging and 16” around. The bag works equally well unlined or lined.

The bottom of this granny square drawstring bag is a flat circle. The body of the bag begins with a few rounds of single crochet before the 4 traditional granny squares are joined to form the main part of the body of the bag. Use one color in the squares or mix it up with 3 different colors to make your bag truly unique.

The body of the bag is finished off with more rounds of single crochet and a beautiful shell top border. A drawstring, threaded through a special round of double crochets and chain-1 spaces, provides both the closure and the handle. I crocheted the drawstring but you can certainly use a rope or ribbon to make yours.

About the yarn

Any sturdy worsted weight yarn will do. Animal fibers should be avoided because they’ll stretch out when weight is added to the bag. Use acrylic or cotton instead.

This project provides a great way to shop your stash. It can be worked in one color if you choose to either purchase yarn or shop your stash. Or, it can be worked in multiple colors, especially because the various sections of the bag offer so many possibilities.

Because the bag takes only around 3oz of yarn total, you may easily be able to shop your stash (like I did) for all the yarn you need.
