Here’s everything you need to know about the Follow Your Heart crochet textured square.

I love blankets, don’t you?! I keep my house cool in the winter so it can get a little chilly. I keep a blanket on my favorite recliner for those times when it gets a bit nippy.

Blankets provide so much comfort in the colder weather. But, what if it’s summer time and you don’t need a blanket?

Here’s some great news – crochet blanket squares are the absolute perfect project for the summer. They’re small, they travel well, and you’re making the components for that beautiful blanket you’ll be putting together for when the weather DOES turn cold.

The Follow Your Heart blanket square is a crochet textured square that’s perfect for when you want to add a touch of handmade love to your favorite space in the house.

Design + Construction

The design inspiration for this beautiful crochet textured square cames from the blanket it’s designed for. Melanie of Simply Melanie Jane designed a blanket using the same technique for each square: a raised stitch that, when worked in a specific pattern, produces a raised crochet textured square.

The Follow Your Heart crochet textured square is worked in rows. Rows of double crochet stitches are alternated with carefully worked front post treble crochet stitches that create a design on the right side surface of the square.

The square works up quickly – just 31 stitches across and 19 rows.

Use this crochet textured square for any handmade item that uses squares as part of their construction. While it’s originally designed as part of a blanket, it can easily be used for a throw pillow for a quick home decor solution. You could even use the square in a scarf. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination!

The technique + the stitch

The main stitches used in this crochet textured square are the double crochet and the front post treble crochet. The technique to create the raised texture on the right side of the square is easy to learn and easy to work.

The square is worked with alternating rows of the stitch pattern. Wrong side rows are always double crochet. On right side rows, the front post treble crochet is worked in the double crochet 2 rows directly below. Following the stitch placement indicated in the pattern (and in the chart included in the PDF), you’ll end up with the heart design you see in the photo above.

The front post treble crochet is classified as a texture stitch or raised stitch. Raised crochet stitches add a three-dimensional quality to a crochet textured square, making it more tactile and interesting to look at. The FPtr stitches are a great way to add interest to an otherwise flat, ordinary surface.

A word about this technique: Because the front post treble crochets are worked around a stitch that’s 2 rows below, it’s awfully easy to pull them up too short. Doing so will cause the square to curl toward the right side of the fabric. Be sure to pull up the first loop of the treble crochet to the height of a normal stitch to prevent the curling.

This crochet textured square is worked in worsted weight yarn. While technically you could use any worsted weight yarn for this crochet textured square, you want to choose something that doesn’t have a lot of fuzz or “halo”. You want those beautiful stitches to pop out so the design is obvious.

Why buy the PDF when the pattern is free here on the blog?

Even if you’re interested in saving a dollar here and there, sometimes it just makes more sense to spend a little bit for a lot of benefit. In the PDF, you’ll get a beautifully formatted pattern:

  • It includes detailed written instructions in an easy to read format.
  • If you prefer a chart, the PDF has one for you.
  • You won’t have to scroll through ads or bookmark this page (although you should).
