I love the basic granny square. But, sometimes you just need something a bit different. That’s why I designed this crochet popcorn stitch granny square. It adds just the right ‘pop’ of texture without losing the character and look of the basic granny square.

Design + Construction

My intent with this popcorn stitch granny square was to create a variation of the basic granny square. Adding popcorn stitches seemed like a great way to add some texture without losing the look of the traditional granny square.

The center begins like every other granny square with 2 rounds of granny stitch. Round 3 switches to a solid texture with no chain 1 spaces to set up for the round that has the popcorn stitches. Popcorn stitches visually stand out when they’re set against a solid background. The square is finished off with a round of granny stitch because it is a basic granny square after all!

This popcorn stitch granny square is the 2nd square in the Fireside Throw CAL. To see the slight variations made for the CAL square, scroll down.

About the yarn + hook

Any worsted weight yarn will work. Use something you already have in your stash to make this popcorn stitch granny square.

For the sample I used Knit Picks “Brava Worsted”. It’s inexpensive and comes in loads of colors. Because it’s acrylic, it’s also easy care and durable, making it a great choice for blankets that get a lot of use.

Other yarn choices that would work well: Paintbox Yarns “Simply Aran”, Lion Brand “Schitt’s Creek” or “Pound of Love”

I chose a US size I-9 (5.5mm) for this popcorn stitch granny square. However, if you’d like a more compact look and a slightly smaller square, switch to a US size H-8 (5mm) instead. I love to use the 5mm with worsted weight yarn because the stitches always seem to be firmer but for this square I used the larger hook to get the finished size I needed.

  3. A ch-3 may be substituted for the STsc at the beg of each rnd without altering the construction or look of the square.
  4. Change colors by dropping the working yarn before the final step of the last st of the round and completing the last st with the new color to start the new round.

Square #2 for the Fireside Throw CAL

The Grab the Popcorn stitch square for the Fireside Throw

Find all the details for the Fireside Throw CAL here.

Round 7 of the Grab the Popcorn granny stitch square is different than the instructions above in this variation (see below). Both versions should work in your very own Fireside Throw as long as the resulting size is the same as the other squares in your throw.

I prefer Round 7 of this variation for the Fireside Throw because it matches the other squares in the blanket and it adds a nice finishing touch to the square, making it easier to sew to the other squares.

All done with your new Grab the Popcorn Stitch Granny Square! Now, here’s another pattern that uses a similar layout.

You’ll love the Bits and Bobs Baby Blanket. Because of the repeating pattern in the rounds, you can easily adjust the size to become an adult blanket if you prefer.
