Every Christmas, my husband and I don our Santa hats and reindeer horns to pass out all the goodies on Christmas morning. We have so much fun watching everyone empty the stockings and ripping off the wrapping paper.

This past Christmas, it was time to make something for Daisy, our 18 lb mini Aussie-doodle. She’s not a particular fan of wearing anything besides her collar and harness. Somehow, I managed to get her to wear this crochet dog scarf for the briefest of moments.

She was so cute. I didn’t want to take it off but she had other ideas.

There’s no question we absolutely love our pups. There’s almost nothing we wouldn’t do for them. They provide us with comfort, companionship, playmates. I’ve never been one to dress up my dogs. But, this time I just couldn’t resist dressing Daisy up in her very own fur-trimmed crochet dog scarf for Christmas!

Design + Construction for the crochet dog scarf

While the version of the crochet dog scarf I made for Daisy was specifically for the Christmas season, this crochet dog scarf can be made with any season or holiday in mind. It’s simple construction makes it a quick project, perfect for using up bits of worsted weight yarn you might have in your stash.

The body of the scarf is a simple crescent shape, formed through increases and decreases along one edge. Add a few rows in the center of the scarf for a gentle curve. The scarf is finished off with faux fur for a holiday themed crochet dog scarf. You can also finish off the scarf with the same color as the body or in a contrast color for a fun look.

The Yarn

Because this is a crochet dog scarf, the yarn you choose should be easy to launder, comfortable for the dog (because I don’t know many dogs that love scratchy things) and durable with repeated use (because your dog will LOVE wearing her new crochet dog scarf).

I raided my stash to find the yarn for Daisy’s crochet dog scarf. I used Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Yarn” in Fire Red for the body of the scarf. For the faux fur, I had some Yarn Bee “Fur the Moment” in Cream, although it looks white to me.

Any worsted weight yarn will work. Here are a few great substitutes:

  • Paintbox “Simply Aran”
  • KnitPicks “Brava Worsted”
  • Red Heart “Super Saver”

The faux fur is a little less common. Here are a few I found:

  • Loops & Threads “Faux Fur”
  • Lion Brand “Go for Faux”
  • Knit Picks “Fable Fur”

A chart with sizes and finished measurements for the Christmas crochet dog scarf

Sizes in the instructions are listed either S (M, L) for rows or (S, M, L) for stitch counts.

Sizing note: Because I’ve provided a range of neck circumferences for each size, the instructions are for the upper end of the range (listed in parentheses at the end of the size).

Abbreviations – US crochet terminology

  • beg – beginning
  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • pm – place marker
  • rep – repeat
  • sc – single crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • YO – yarn over

Special Stitches

Half double crochet decrease (hdc dec)This version is less bulky than a regular decrease because the 1st YO for the 2nd hdc in the decrease is eliminated. YO, insert hook in indicated st, YO, pull up a loop, insert hook in next st, YO, pull up a loop, YO, draw through all 4 loops on the hook.

Half double crochet increase (hdc inc) – 2 hdc in the same st.

Written Instructions

Pattern Notes

  1. Read through the entire pattern before beginning to make the scarf.
  2. A “ch 1” at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch. Always work the 1st st of the row in the same st as the “ch 1”.
  3. To create the crescent shape, increases and decreases are all worked along the same edge. Place a stitch marker anywhere along that edge to remember where to work the inc/dec stitches.
  4. Stitch counts are only listed when there is a change. If no stitch count is listed, it stays the same.

Pattern Instructions

Note: The scarf is worked in one piece. All increases are worked along one edge to the halfway point and all decreases are worked along the same edge from the halfway point to the end.

  1. This is a really nice pattern to make. I enjoyed it and even though I would recommend making sure you keep track of your line count.
