A sweet, simple crochet preemie hat | The Logan Hat Crochet Pattern
The Logan crochet preemie hat is a simple, quick way to give premature babies the warmth and comfort they need. Easy, beginner-friendly beanie pattern for loved ones or charity.

There’s something so meaningful about a handmade hat in the NICU. For a preemie, crochet isn’t just a sweet accessory. It plays a real role in those fragile early days.
A soft, crochet preemie hat provides physical comfort and warmth, and helps tiny bodies regulate temperature, something they aren’t able to do well on their own yet.
Beyond the practical, though, those little hats do something more: they become a symbol of hope and security for families navigating one of the hardest times in their lives.
That’s what I hope for the Logan crochet preemie hat – a small, tangible reminder that someone, somewhere, was thinking of their baby and stitched a little bit of love into every round.

Design + Construction
A crochet preemie hat should provide the warmth a premature baby so desperately needs. It should also be cute, providing comfort to those holding vigil with the premature baby.
With that dual purpose in mind, I chose a very simple, beginner friendly design for my crochet preemie hat.
The hat is worked top down starting with a flat circle crown. Continuing with rounds of simple double crochets, the hat begins to take shape.
The crochet preemie hat is finished off with two rounds of granny stitch for a subtle but fun border that’s easy to work.
You’ll find the simple design is ideal for last minute gifts or making multiples to donate to local organizations that serve the NICU community.
Sizes available
This crochet preemie hat is actually offered in 3 sizes:
- The Preemie Size (available for free here on the blog): Approx. 5″ across x 4.5″ high to fit 10.5″ head circumference
- The Newborn Size 0-3 months (available in the premium PDF only): 6.5″ across x 5.5″ high to fit 13.75″ head circumference
- The Baby Size 6-9 months (available in the premium PDF only): 8″ across x 6.5″ high to fit 17.5″ head circumference
The Yarn
Choosing the best yarn for a preemie’s delicate skin is critical. Tender skin is prone to sensitivities we don’t often need to consider.
Chemicals, lotions, and soaps can be easily absorbed through a preemie’s porous skin. And, preemies are prone to contact dermatitis caused by rough or synthetic fibers.
I chose Premier Yarns “Cotton Sprout DK” for my crochet preemie hat because it’s one of the softest cotton yarns I’ve ever used. Plus, it’s OEKO-TEX® Certified: approved and tested for 350+ harmful substances to keep you and your family safe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pattern appropriate for beginner crocheters?
Yes, the stitches and techniques used are perfect for beginners. In fact, crocheters of all skill levels will love making this crochet preemie hat.
Can I add a flower or pompom to my hat?
You certainly can. But, take into account who might be wearing the hat. For the youngest, whatever you put on the hat should be securely attached to avoid accidental ingestion.
Is the granny stitch easy to work?
Absolutely! It’s just 3 double crochets worked in the same stitch or space – no big deal!

Pattern Notes
- Do not turn after any rnd.
- A ch-2 or ch-3 may be substituted for the STsc at any time without affecting the construction.
- The STsc is worked in the next st instead of the st with the join to hide the seam. Be sure to work the last st into the st with the join.
- The GS in the final rnd are worked in the space between GS from the rnd before where a ch-1 space normally would be.
- Count often.
