Crochet Holiday Gift Ideas

I’m not a social butterfly. Most of the time, I like to spend a cozy and quiet holiday at home. But there are a few events I attend each year and I always like to bring a little something for the host.

Throughout the year—especially during special occasions like the holidays—I like to think of crochet hostess gift ideas to express my gratitude in a heartfelt, personal way.

My podcast partner, Biz of Bizzy Crochet and Design, and I both enjoy presenting our hosts with thoughtful, handmade gifts. My journey into the realm of crochet gifts started way back when my kids were in elementary school. I vividly remember spending countless hours creating unique teacher gifts in crochet and cross-stitch.

I have carried this tradition into my adult life. Biz gives handmade gifts as a matter of etiquette and an expression of gratitude for the host’s hospitality.

No matter how you arrived at making crochet hostess gifts, we’re glad you’re here. So let’s dive into the whys and hows of giving handmade gifts, as well as some of our favorite crochet hostess gift ideas for the holidays.

If someone has opened their home to us, especially if they have prepared a meal, it’s only natural to show our appreciation. It’s not about the extravagance of the gift. Whether it’s a small handmade item or a store-bought gift, the key is expressing gratitude for the hospitality you’ve received.

Biz and I agree that it’s the effort and personal touch that make these gifts stand out. While you can easily buy something from a store, a handmade gift carries a piece of you. It’s a way of saying, “I put thought and time into creating this just for you.” There’s a unique charm in handmade items that you can’t find in mass-produced gifts.

  • Home décor: coasters, wine bottle cozies (like this gorgeous wine bottle cozy), washcloths, potholders, small storage baskets, towel topper with kitchen towels, planters
  • Personal items: bookmarks, cup or can cozy, ice cream pint covers
  • Holiday gifts: ornaments, gift toppers that can be repurposed, gift card holders
  • Gift baskets: include your hand crocheted items along with handmade soaps, jams and jellies, or your favorite recipe. This is a great way to support local artisan businesses or your favorite Etsy shops during the holidays.

How to say “thank you” without breaking the bank

If you’re working within a budget, there are still plenty of crochet hostess gift ideas that you can create by repurposing items you already have. For example, you can use up all the little random balls of cotton yarn in your stash to create Biz’s Happy Scrappy Pint Cover.

To control costs, keep your gifts small and meaningful. You can also pair handmade items with other thoughtful touches like a thank-you note to add a personal touch without breaking the bank.

Our go-to holiday hostess gifts

Biz and I are always coming up with crochet hostess gift ideas, some from our own designs and some from other designers we know.

Biz loves crafting dishcloths and makes them in between other projects so she always has a stash on-hand. She also gifts slippers, which she personalizes to each recipient’s size.

Personally, I often create wine-themed items for our annual get-together with special friends who share our interest in wine. I also love to gift traditional, timeless potholders (they make great stocking stuffers, too).

Both of us enjoy creating unique Christmas ornaments as well. Most of all, we love the process of being creative and finding something new to surprise our friends and family with each year.

This Christmas ornament from Marsha YarnDoodles started as a coaster pattern. But by making two coasters, stitching them together, and adding stuffing, Biz created an adorable Christmas ornament. You can find the Christmas ornament pattern here.

Sonya Blackstone of Blackstone Designs has created 40 different crochet gift baskets, each based on the bottom half a cute character. You’ll find characters for just about any holiday, career, or interest you can imagine so you can personalize the gift for your loved one.

Sarah Korth of SEK Handmade has designed a small door decoration shaped like a mitten. You can fill it with dried flowers, holiday greenery, or other festive accents to suit your recipient’s style preferences. The pattern is available in Sarah’s Ravelry store.

For even more ideas, Pinterest is the ultimate place to find inspiration for all things handmade. A simple search for “crochet Christmas hostess gift” yields hundreds of images of crochet hostess gift ideas that you can browse.

Search the same terms on Google and you’ll find roundup posts that gather patterns around different themes by various designers.

I hope I’ve encouraged you to go get creative (with Biz’s help, of course) with all of the possibilities for crochet hostess gift ideas. Show your gratitude to all those who host you this holiday season.
