In this tutorial you’ll learn how to work the beautiful crochet star stitch in the round.

How to work the crochet star stitch in rounds | A tutorial by MadameStitch

Now that I’ve written a tutorial for the crochet star stitch in rows, I thought I would write one that shows you the crochet star stitch in the round especially since I have a design coming out soon that will feature it.

This tutorial addresses the differences between rows and rounds and gives you all the tools you need to be a star stitch expert.

What is the crochet star stitch?

The crochet star stitch is also known by the name Daisy stitch or Marguerite stitch. It’s a simple 2-round repeat that creates a star burst pattern on the right side of the work.

In the first round of the pattern, loops are pulled up in a sc5tog pattern and closed with a chain to form the eye of the star stitch. The second round of the pattern is half double crochets worked in the eye to complete the star burst pattern on the right side of the fabric.

The crochet star stitch looks complicated but it’s really easy to learn. The only tricky part is learning where to pick up loops to make the star stitch work. That’s what I’ll be showing you in this tutorial for working in rounds.

Note: You can make star stitches with a varying number of spikes as well as substituting single crochets for the half double crochets, so you may find different instructions for different variations of the crochet star stitch. These directions are for making a common five-spike crochet star stitch, completed with a round of half double crochets, but the tutorial will help you understand how to make any variation of the stitch.

The crochet star stitch is similar to a sc5tog.

Single crochet 5 together simply means that you pull up loops in 5 consecutive stitches before finishing the single crochet. The crochet star stitch is really a sc5tog except that the loops are pulled up partly from parts of the previous star stitch and partly from unworked stitches in the row. The concept is the same, though.

Differences between working in rows and working in rounds

  • The second round of the 2-round pattern – the hdc round – is worked on the right side of the fabric instead of the wrong side. That’s because you won’t be turning after a round is completed. Everything is worked on the right side of the fabric.
  • In the final star stitch of the round, an extra loop is pulled up to link the first and last star stitches.

How to use this tutorial

This tutorial shows you the variations of the crochet star stitch depending upon where in the project the star stitch is worked. Skip to the part of this tutorial that shows you how to work the star stitch where you are.

Abbreviations used in this tutorial – US crochet terminology

  • ch – chain
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • st – stitch
  • YO – yarn over

The crochet star stitch starts here.

Work the star stitch version that corresponds to where you are in the project – starting the round in the foundation chain or in subsequent rounds, working a round of star stitch, or working the last star stitch of the round to close the gap at the join.

Each round of star stitch is always followed by a round of hdc to complete the star burst pattern. When working in the round, you will not turn after the round is completed like you do in rows.

Beginning star stitch

Whether you’re working the first star stitch in the foundation chain or starting a new round later in the project, the beginning star stitch will be worked the same. For the foundation chain, you’ll be working into the chains instead of the hdc from the round before.

Ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, YO, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).

Insert hook in next ch, YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).

Insert hook into 1st hdc (the one at the base of the ch-3), YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).

Insert hook into next unworked hdc, YO, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).

Insert hook into next unworked hdc, YO, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).

YO, pull through all 6 loops on hook.

Ch 1 to complete the star stitch and form the eye of the star stitch.

Star stitch across the round

After the 1st star stitch of the round is worked, this version is what you’ll work around.

Insert hook into ch-1 (eye) just made, YO, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).

Insert hook into the last loop pulled up in previous star stitch, YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).

Insert hook into same st as the last loop of the previous st, YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).

Insert hook into next unworked st, YO, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).

Insert hook into next unworked st, YO, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).

YO, draw through all 6 loops on hook.

Ch 1 to complete the star stitch and form the eye of the star stitch.

Final star stitch of the round

Working a regular star stitch at the end of a round and then joining to the beginning star stitch will leave a gap. To close this gap at the join, I pull up a 7th loop. Follow the steps below.

Insert hook into ch-1 (eye) of star st just made, YO, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).

Insert hook into the last loop pulled up in previous star stitch, YO, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).

Insert hook into same st as the last loop of the previous star st, YO, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).

Insert hook into next unworked st, YO, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).

Insert hook into the base of the same st as the beg star st, YO, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).

Insert hook through side loop of beg star st (the 2nd ch of the beg ch-3), YO, pull up a loop (7 loops on hook).

YO, draw through all 7 loops on hook.

Ch 1 to complete the star stitch and form the eye of the star stitch. Join with slip st to beg st of round.

Hdc round

The second round of the crochet star stitch pattern is a round of hdc (in this case) to complete the star burst pattern on the right side of the fabric.

Ch 1, 2 hdc in the eye of the 1st star stitch of the previous round.

Work 2 hdc in each eye around. Join with slip st to beg st of round.
